What Is the Descendant Sign?
Your Descendant sign is the zodiac sign that was setting on the western horizon at the moment you were born. It sits exactly opposite your rising sign and opens your 7th house, the house of partners.
A one-sentence definition
Every birth chart has a horizon. The point rising in the east is your Ascendant, or rising sign; the point setting in the west, directly opposite, is your Descendant. The Descendant sign is the sign that point falls in.
Astrologers read it as the doorway to relationships. Your rising sign describes how you meet the world; your Descendant sign describes what you look for, and often meet, in the people who stand across from you.
The point setting on the western horizon
Picture the sky at the minute you were born. The Sun, the planets and the signs are all turning westward, and one degree of the zodiac is sinking below the horizon right then. That degree is your Descendant.
Because the sky turns a full circle in a day, the Descendant moves into a new sign about every two hours. That is why this calculator needs a birth time for an exact answer, and why it shows the whole day when you do not have one.
Always opposite your rising sign
The Descendant is exactly 180° from the Ascendant, so the two always share the same degree in opposite signs. A rising sign at 24° Pisces means a Descendant at 24° Virgo.
That gives six pairs, or axes, from Aries–Libra to Virgo–Pisces. If you already know your rising sign from our rising sign calculator or your big three, you know your Descendant sign too. What the calculator adds is the exact degree, your 7th house and its ruler.
How to Find Your Descendant Sign
The calculator at the top of this page works out your Descendant sign, degree and 7th house in one step. Here is how to read what it gives you.
Step 1: Enter your birth date, time and place
The time decides the Descendant. If you do not know it, switch on “I don’t know the time” and you will get the day’s Descendant windows instead.
Step 2: Read your Descendant sign and degree
The result shows the sign setting in the west at your birth and its exact degree, opposite your rising sign.
Step 3: Check the boundary warning
If your birth time is within 15 minutes of a sign change, the calculator names the other sign and the time of the change.
In the example above, Alex was born at 06:25 with the Descendant at 24°32′ Virgo. Thirteen minutes later, at 06:37, the Descendant sign became Libra, so a birth time rounded by a quarter of an hour could change the answer.
Step 4: Read your 7th house
See the planets in your 7th house, or the empty-house note, and the ruler of your Descendant with the house it sits in.
Step 5: Add a partner
Optionally enter a partner’s birth details to see which of their points land on your Descendant, in your 7th house or in your Descendant sign.
Your Descendant Sign Without a Birth Time
Most calculators stop when the birth time is missing. We show every Descendant sign of your birth day instead, with the local times each one held, so you can see which are possible.
The day’s Descendant windows
Over one day the Descendant passes through all twelve signs, though not for equal lengths of time. On Alex’s birth day in New York, Virgo held the Descendant from 05:26 to 06:37 and Aries from 18:35 to 21:07.
If you know you were born in the morning, or after dinner, that narrows the list to two or three candidates. Tap a window in the calculator and its reading appears below.
How close is close enough?
We tested how often a small error in the birth time changes the result. The answer depends on how far the true time sits from the nearest sign change.
Exact to the minute
You get one sign and its exact degree. The calculator still warns you when the time sits within 15 minutes of a sign change.
Rounded to the half hour
A time off by up to 15 minutes changed the Descendant sign for 24.9% of people in our sample. Check the warning and read both signs if it appears.
Within an hour
Off by up to 30 minutes, 49.8% of people could land in a different sign; off by up to an hour, 88.2%. Treat the result as one of two candidates.
Unknown
Use the day’s windows, then narrow down an unknown birth time with the rising sign descriptions: your rising sign and your Descendant sign always change together.
The 12 Descendant Signs in Love
Each Descendant sign describes qualities you are drawn to and tend to meet in close relationships. Because it is the opposite of your rising sign, it often names what you show less of yourself. Here they are, by axis.
The Aries–Libra axis: me and we
Descendant in Aries
You are drawn to directness and courage, and you tend to meet people who act fast and say what they want. The work is to state your own wishes instead of letting the other person carry all the decisions.
Descendant in Libra
You are drawn to grace, fairness and good manners. Partners often bring the patience and diplomacy that your own quick instincts skip over.
The Taurus–Scorpio axis: mine and ours
Descendant in Taurus
You are drawn to calm, steady people who know what they like. They ground your intensity, as long as you read their calm as care rather than indifference.
Descendant in Scorpio
You are drawn to depth, privacy and emotional honesty. Partners stir up your routines; honest talk about trust and money keeps that depth from turning into a struggle.
The Gemini–Sagittarius axis: the question and the answer
Descendant in Gemini
You are drawn to quick minds and good conversation. Partners bring details, news and second opinions into your big picture.
Descendant in Sagittarius
You are drawn to openness, humour and a wider view. Partners stretch a world built on detail, and shared adventures keep the bond generous.
The Cancer–Capricorn axis: home and the world
Descendant in Cancer
You are drawn to warmth and care, to people who make a place feel like home. Letting yourself be looked after is part of the lesson.
Descendant in Capricorn
You are drawn to maturity, ambition and reliability. Partners give structure to a life led by feeling, and respect often comes before open affection.
The Leo–Aquarius axis: the heart and the group
Descendant in Leo
You are drawn to warm confidence and open affection. Celebrating each other plainly matters more to this placement than being clever.
Descendant in Aquarius
You are drawn to originality and independence. Friendship inside the romance, and room to be separate, bring you closer than grand gestures.
The Virgo–Pisces axis: the detail and the whole
Descendant in Virgo
You are drawn to competence and quiet care. Share the practical tasks rather than handing them all to a partner, and small acts of service will read as love both ways.
Descendant in Pisces
You are drawn to gentleness and imagination. Partners bring compassion into a life of lists; leave room for what cannot be measured.
Why Some Descendant Signs Are Rarer
If you have never met anyone with your Descendant sign, there may be a reason. Descendant signs are not equally common, and the difference grows with latitude.
Some signs set slowly
Away from the equator, some signs take much longer to cross the horizon than others. In our sample of births at 40° north, Pisces was the Descendant sign 10.7% of the time and Libra only 4.9%, about two to one.
At 50° north the gap widens to more than three to one: Aquarius held the Descendant for 12.0% of births, Virgo and Libra for 3.7% each. On an average day there, a Descendant in Aquarius lasts about 172 minutes and a Descendant in Libra about 53.
North and south of the equator
South of the equator the pattern flips. At 35° south, Cancer and Leo each held the Descendant for 10.1% of births, while Aries managed 5.4%. A placement that is rare in Chicago is common in Sydney or Buenos Aires.
None of this changes what your Descendant sign means. It only explains why some of them feel unusual in the north and ordinary in the south.
The 7th House: Planets, Ruler and an Empty House
Your Descendant is the cusp of the 7th house, the house of committed partnerships, close collaborators and open rivals. The Descendant sign sets its tone; the planets inside and the house’s ruler fill in the detail.
Planets in your 7th house
A planet in the 7th house tends to show up through partners. Venus there often brings charm and a wish for harmony; Mars brings energy and friction; Saturn a serious, slow approach to commitment.
The calculator lists every planet in your 7th house with its sign and degree, and a short reading for each.
What an empty 7th house means
Half of all charts have no planet in the 7th house: 50.0% in our sample of 8,000 births. Another 29.5% had one planet there, 13.1% two, 4.9% three, and only 2.5% four or more.
An empty 7th house does not mean an absence of partners. It means the Descendant sign and its ruler carry the story instead.
Your 7th-house ruler
Every sign has a ruling planet: Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. Many astrologers add Pluto, Uranus and Neptune as modern co-rulers of Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces.
Where that ruler sits shows where relationships tend to start or matter most. Alex’s Descendant sign is Virgo, so Mercury rules the 7th house; Mercury sits in Aries in the 1st house, which points to relationships that shape who Alex becomes.
Placidus or Whole Sign for the 7th
In Placidus houses the 7th starts at the Descendant’s exact degree; in Whole Sign houses it is the whole sign on the Descendant. The two often disagree about which planets are inside.
In our sample, 53.7% of the planets in a Placidus 7th house were not in the Whole Sign 7th. The calculator marks each one, so you can see which placements both systems agree on.
Descendant Sign Compatibility: Reading It With a Partner
Adding a partner to the calculator shows which of their points land on your Descendant side. It is a quick check, not a verdict.
Their planets in your Descendant sign
It is easy to find your Descendant sign in another chart. A random stranger has the Sun in your Descendant sign 8.5% of the time, and at least one personal planet there 30.1% of the time; counting their rising sign too, 35.7%.
So a match is pleasant, and common. What matters more is which planet, and how close it sits to the Descendant itself.
On your Descendant, within a few degrees
A partner’s planet within a few degrees of your Descendant is far more specific. In our pairs, a personal planet or rising sign sat within 3° of the Descendant 9.2% of the time, within 5° 14.8%, and within 8° 22.1%.
For the full picture, see your planets in your partner’s houses and the full synastry chart.
Your rising, their Descendant
One contact stands out: a partner’s rising sign right on your Descendant. It means your Ascendant also sits on theirs, so each of you meets the other’s relationship side first.
In the example, Sam’s rising sign sits 1.3° from Alex’s Descendant. The calculator puts contacts like this at the top of the partner list.
Descendant Sign vs Rising Sign, Venus and the Vertex
Several chart points speak about relationships, and they answer different questions. Here is how the Descendant fits with the others.
Descendant vs rising sign
Your rising sign is how you approach the world and how people first see you. Your Descendant sign is what you seek in the person across the table, often the half of the axis you express less.
Descendant vs Venus sign
Your Venus sign describes how you love and what you find beautiful. The Descendant describes the kind of partner you tend to meet. Read them together: one is your style, the other the qualities you are drawn to.
Descendant vs 7th house
The Descendant is the doorway; the 7th house is the room behind it. The sign on it gives the tone, the planets inside give the detail, and the ruler tells you where the story continues.
Descendant vs Vertex
The Vertex is a different point on the western side of the chart, often linked with meetings that feel out of your hands. Its speed swings widely over a day, so it needs an exact birth time too.
| Descendant sign | Rising sign | Venus sign | Vertex | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Answers | What you seek in a partner | How you meet the world | How you love | Meetings that feel arranged |
| Needs a birth time | Yes (windows without) | Yes | Rarely | Yes, to the minute |
| Changes about every | 2 hours | 2 hours | Few weeks | Varies |

Descendant Sign Myths
A few claims about the Descendant sign circulate widely. Here is how they hold up against the numbers.
“Your Descendant sign is the sign you will end up with”
The Descendant describes qualities, not a person or a Sun sign. With a third of random strangers sharing a personal planet with your Descendant sign, a match on its own proves little.
“An empty 7th house means no partner”
Half of everyone has an empty 7th house, including many people in long relationships. Read the sign on the Descendant and its ruler instead.
“Your partner must match your Descendant”
Most pairs, including close and lasting ones, have no planet on each other’s Descendant. Aspects between the two charts, and how you treat each other, carry far more weight.
Descendant Sign FAQ
›What is my Descendant sign?
Your Descendant sign is the zodiac sign that was setting on the western horizon at the moment you were born. It sits exactly opposite your rising sign and marks the start of your 7th house, the house of partners. Enter your birth date, time and place above to find it.
›Is the Descendant always opposite the rising sign?
Yes. The Descendant is exactly 180° from the Ascendant, so it has the same degree in the opposite sign: a rising sign at 12° Pisces means a Descendant at 12° Virgo. That is why your Descendant sign changes whenever your rising sign does.
›Can I find my Descendant sign without a birth time?
Not a single answer, but you can see every Descendant sign of your birth day with the times each one held. Even a rough time helps: in our sample, a birth time off by 15 minutes changed the Descendant sign for 24.9% of people, and by an hour for 88.2%.
›Is the Descendant the same as the 7th house?
The Descendant is where the 7th house begins: its cusp. The house itself covers the stretch of sky above it, and which planets fall inside depends on the house system. In our sample, 53.7% of the planets in a Placidus 7th house were not in the Whole Sign 7th.
›What does an empty 7th house mean?
It means no planet happens to sit there, which is true for about half of everyone (50.0% in our sample). It does not mean an absence of partners. Read the sign on the cusp, your Descendant sign, and the planet that rules it instead.
›What is my 7th house ruler?
It is the planet that rules your Descendant sign: Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, and so on, with modern co-rulers for Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. The house it sits in shows where in your life relationships tend to start or matter most.
›Can my Descendant sign predict my future partner?
No. It describes qualities you are drawn to and tend to meet, not a person or a sign you must end up with. A random stranger has at least one personal planet in your Descendant sign about 30% of the time, so a match proves little on its own.
›Descendant or Venus: which matters more for attraction?
They answer different questions. Your Venus sign describes how you love and what you find beautiful; your Descendant sign describes what you look for and meet in another person, often the qualities you show less yourself. Read them together.
›Does the Descendant matter for friendships and business partners?
Yes. The 7th house covers every one-to-one partnership, including close collaborators, business partners and open rivals. The same Descendant sign shows up in all of them, not only in romance.
›Is the Descendant sign calculator free?
Yes, entirely, with no account. You get the sign and degree, the boundary warning, the planets and ruler of your 7th house, the readings, the windows for an unknown birth time and the partner check.
