Why Houses Matter for Transits
A transit's aspect describes the kind of energy in play. A transit's house describes where in your life the energy lands. The same Saturn transit reads completely differently depending on whether it sits in your 10th house (career) or your 4th (home and family). Houses are the where.
For the outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron — a single house transit lasts months or years. These are the slow arcs that define chapters of life. Tracking the moment one of them moves from house to house tells you when one chapter ends and the next begins.
How Long Does Each Planet Spend in a House?
- Sun — ~30 days per house. The cleanest annual rhythm; transits the whole zodiac (and your whole chart) every year.
- Mars — 45–90 days per house. Energy and drive routed through different areas of life every few weeks.
- Jupiter — ~12 months per house. The "year of expansion" cycle — what grows in that area of life.
- Saturn — ~2.5 years per house. The "what am I building / what's being tested" arc.
- Chiron — variable, 4–7 years per house. Long, slow integration of unhealed material in that area.
- Uranus — ~7 years per house. Sudden shifts in that area of life that change the rules.
- Neptune — ~14 years per house. Dissolution and softening in that domain — both the beauty and the loss of clarity.
- Pluto — 12–30 years per house. The deepest, slowest rewrite of an entire life area.
Reading a House Ingress
When a transit planet crosses a house cusp, the previous theme closes and a new one opens. Pay attention to the week around the ingress date — that's when the shift is most felt.
Retrograde re-crossings happen when a planet enters a house, then retrogrades back into the previous one, then stations and crosses again. These triple-passes (out, back, out again) are some of the most important moments in any chart — they give you time to live in both houses for a few months and clarify what each one is asking for. We flag them with ℞ in the table.
