What Is Venus Retrograde?
Venus retrograde is the roughly six-week stretch, every 19 months, when Venus appears to move backward through the zodiac because it is overtaking Earth on the inside track. In 2026 it runs from October 3 to November 13, from 8°29′ Scorpio back to 22°52′ Libra.
A one-sentence definition
Venus never actually reverses. Venus retrograde is an effect of viewpoint: we watch Venus from a planet that is also moving, so for a few weeks its position against the stars slides the wrong way.
Astrologers read that backward slide as a review period for whatever Venus stands for — love, attraction, what we value and how we show it. That is the whole idea, and the rest of this page fills in the details.
Why Venus seems to move backward
Venus orbits the Sun in 225 days; Earth takes 365. Every 584 days the faster planet catches up with the slower one and passes between Earth and the Sun. Around that pass, the line of sight from Earth to Venus swings backward across the sky.
The middle of the retrograde is that pass itself, called the inferior conjunction. In 2026 it happens on October 24, when Venus is 40.8 million kilometres from Earth — about as close as it ever comes.
How often it happens
Venus retrograde is one of the rarest retrogrades in the sky. It comes round about every 19 months and lasts between 40.9 and 43.0 days (every cycle from 2017 to 2035). Mercury, by comparison, turns retrograde three or four times a year.

The shadow period, explained
Every Venus retrograde covers one stretch of the zodiac three times. The shadow is the name for the two extra passes on either side of the retrograde itself. In 2026 that stretch runs from 22°52′ Libra to 8°29′ Scorpio — 15.6 degrees in all.
Pre-shadow: August 31 – October 3
Venus moves forward through the stretch for the first time. Themes that will be reviewed later often show up here first, as a small irritation or an old memory.
Retrograde: October 3 – November 13
Venus backs up over the same degrees. This is the review itself, and the part of the cycle most people mean when they say "Venus retrograde".
Post-shadow: November 14 – December 15
Venus moves forward over the stretch one last time. Decisions that felt impossible in October tend to get easier here, because the review has had time to finish.
Why sites disagree by a day
Venus turns direct at 00:20 UTC on November 14 — which is still November 13 everywhere in the Americas (late afternoon on the US West Coast, evening in New York and Brazil). Both dates are right; they are the same moment in different time zones.
Stations are also hard to time to the minute. At the turning point Venus's speed is zero, so the curve is flat and published ephemerides differ by a few minutes. That is why the checker shows stations to the hour.
The Sky Behind This Venus Retrograde
Every Venus retrograde has its own character, set by where it happens and what else it meets. The 2026 cycle has three features worth knowing before you read anything about your own chart.
Venus disappears, then returns as the morning star
Before the retrograde, Venus is the bright evening star in the west after sunset. Around October 19 it sinks too close to the Sun to see, and around October 29 it reappears in the east before dawn as the morning star.
It keeps brightening after that and peaks on November 27 at magnitude −4.9 — the brightest point of the whole cycle. If you want a physical reminder of the retrograde, look east an hour before sunrise in late November.
The heart of it: Venus meets the Sun on October 24
Venus lines up with the Sun at 0°45′ Scorpio on October 24 at 03:39 UTC (the evening of October 23 in North America). Astrologers treat this inferior conjunction as the midpoint of the retrograde story — the moment a new Venus cycle begins.
Practically, it is a good date for an honest conversation rather than a big decision. The review is half done, and half is still ahead.
Three squares to Pluto
The signature of this cycle is a square between Venus and Pluto that happens three times: on September 15, October 20 and December 9, each time with Venus around 3° Scorpio and Pluto around 3° Aquarius. One in each phase — pre-shadow, retrograde and post-shadow.
Venus–Pluto contacts are about power and trust: jealousy, control, what is hidden and what we are afraid to lose. Three passes give the same theme a beginning, a middle and an end, which makes it easier to work with rather than harder.
Mercury retrograde joins in
Mercury turns retrograde on October 24, the same day Venus meets the Sun, and turns direct on November 13, hours before Venus does. For those three weeks both planets of connection — love and conversation — are retrograde together.
Double retrogrades have a reputation for crossed wires. The useful version of that is simple: say things twice, check you were heard, and put important agreements in writing.
Venus Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra: What It Means for Love
This Venus retrograde starts in Scorpio and ends in Libra, two signs that want very different things from love. Knowing which leg you are in helps make sense of what comes up.
The Scorpio leg: trust, depth, what has been unsaid
From September 10 to October 25, Venus is in Scorpio, where love is about depth and loyalty. Retrograde here, it tends to bring up what has been kept private: jealousy, unspoken resentments, desire that has gone quiet.
It is a good time to ask the question you have been avoiding. Our Venus in Scorpio page goes deeper into how this sign loves.
The Libra leg: fairness, balance, agreements
From October 25 to December 4, Venus backs into Libra, the sign of partnership and fairness. The review shifts from what is hidden to what is balanced — who gives more, who decides, what the two of you have agreed to.
The question here is less "what am I feeling?" than "is this fair to both of us?". The Venus in Libra page covers this sign in full.
What "review" means in a relationship
Astrologers say Venus retrograde favours the re- words: revisit, reconsider, renegotiate, repair, reconnect. None of them means ending anything. All of them mean looking again before moving forward.
If you are newly together
The first weeks of a relationship are mostly projection, and a retrograde can make the projection wobble. That is information, not a verdict. Let the early picture be revised before you build anything permanent on it.
If you have been together for years
Long relationships run on agreements nobody remembers making. Venus retrograde is a good time to pull a few out and look at them: who cooks, who plans, who apologises first.
If you are single
Old patterns in who you are drawn to become easier to see. Notice the type that still catches your eye, and ask whether it still matches what you want.
If an ex reaches out
People often hear from someone from the past during a Venus retrograde, because the theme is looking back. Nothing in the sky decides what that contact means. Take your time before you answer.
How to Check What Venus Retrograde Touches in Your Charts
Sign-based horoscopes cannot tell you whether this Venus retrograde touches your chart, because the zone is only 15.6 degrees wide. The checker at the top of this page does it from your exact positions, in five steps.
Step 1: Enter your birth details
Add your birth date and place. A birth time is optional: without it the planets are still exact, but the Moon is approximate and the angles and houses are skipped.
Step 2: Add your partner (optional)
Add a second birth date to check both charts at once. The checker works for one person too, and leaves the partner column empty.
Step 3: Read the triple-pass dates
Each card shows a point Venus crosses three times — forward in the pre-shadow, backward while retrograde, and forward again — with the date of every pass in your time zone.
Step 4: Read the houses
With a birth time, the checker shows which of your houses the retrograde zone runs through, and what that area of life tends to bring up.
Step 5: Compare with 2018
Contacts marked with an echo also happened in autumn 2018, the last Venus retrograde in these degrees. What was happening between you, or in your love life, then is worth remembering.
Who Feels This Venus Retrograde Most
A Venus retrograde does not affect everyone equally. What matters is whether one of your planets sits inside the zone it crosses three times. We measured how often that happens.
Seven in ten couples
We cast 6,000 random birth charts from 1950 to 2005 and checked them against the 2026 zone. 46.8% of people have at least one planet in it. Pair them up and 71% of couples have at least one planet, in one chart or the other, that this Venus retrograde passes three times.
Counting the Ascendant, Midheaven and their opposite points raises the share to 80% of couples. So for most couples the question is not whether this retrograde touches them, but where.
Born between October 16 and November 1
If your birthday falls between about October 16 and November 1, your Sun is very likely in the zone, and this Venus retrograde crosses it three times. The exact edges move by a day from year to year, which is why the checker uses your birth date rather than a rule of thumb.
The 1981–1986 Pluto generation
Slow planets stay in the zone for years, so whole birth cohorts share a contact. Anyone born between September 1981 and December 1986 has Pluto in the zone; Venus crosses it three times, echoing the Venus–Pluto squares in the sky.
- Pluto: born September 1981 – December 1986
- Neptune: born September 1953 – December 1959
- Uranus: born October 1973 – November 1976
- Saturn: born 1952 – 1954, late 1982 – late 1983, or 2011 – 2013
Why your Sun sign is not enough
Most Venus retrograde horoscopes are written for twelve Sun signs. But a Scorpio born on November 10 has a Sun well outside the zone, while someone with a late-Virgo Sun and Venus at 25° Libra has their Venus crossed three times. The degree matters more than the sign. For the full picture of how your planets and your partner's interact, see our synastry aspects.
The 8-Year Echo: What Happened Between You in Autumn 2018?
Venus retrogrades repeat on a clock that is easy to use. Every eight years, almost to the day, a Venus retrograde returns to nearly the same degrees. That makes the last one a useful mirror.
Venus repeats itself every eight years
Five Venus cycles take 2,919.6 days — eight years minus 2.4 days. So each Venus retrograde comes back about 2.4 degrees earlier in the zodiac, eight years later. The 2026 retrograde is the return of the one from October 5 to November 16, 2018.
85% of this zone was retrograde in 2018
The 2018 Venus retrograde ran from 10°50′ Scorpio back to 25°15′ Libra. It shares 13.24 of the 15.63 degrees of the 2026 zone — 85%. If a planet of yours is crossed in 2026, it was very probably crossed in 2018 too, and the checker marks every contact that was.
Questions to ask each other about 2018
An echo is not a repeat performance. It is a prompt to remember, and the questions are often more useful than any forecast:
- What were you looking for in love in the autumn of 2018?
- If you were together then, what were you arguing or talking about?
- What did you settle then that may need settling again?
- What has changed since, in you or between you?
Venus Retrograde Myths: What Holds Up and What Doesn't
Venus retrograde comes with a list of rules that most articles repeat without saying where they come from. Here is where they come from, and what is actually worth doing.
"Don't get married"
This comes from electional astrology, the old practice of choosing start dates. It prefers to begin partnerships with Venus moving forward. It is a preference about timing, not a prediction about the marriage, and we know of no data showing that marriages begun during a Venus retrograde fare worse.
If your date is already set, keep it. If you are still choosing, picking a date outside October 3 – November 13 costs nothing and removes the question.
"Your ex will come back"
Venus retrograde is about looking back, so it is no surprise that past loves come to mind, and sometimes get in touch. But nothing in the sky decides whether anyone returns. Whether you reply, and how, stays your decision.
"No haircuts, no cosmetic work, no big purchases"
The tradition here is that Venus rules beauty and money, so changes to either are best made when it moves forward. The practical version is smaller: avoid big, hard-to-reverse changes made on a whim. A haircut grows back; a rushed tattoo does not.
What most astrologers actually agree on
Strip away the rules and one idea is left: Venus retrograde is a good time to look again at what you value and how you love, and a less good time to rush permanent decisions before that look is finished. That is advice worth taking whatever you think of astrology.
Every Venus Retrograde from 2017 to 2035
Venus retrograde moves through five signs in turn, and each sign comes back eight years later. The table lists every cycle from 2017 to 2035, computed with the same engine as the checker. To see every retrograde of the year against your own chart, use the retrograde calculator.

| Sep 30, 2034 | Nov 11, 2034 | Scorpio → Libra | 41.8 |
The five-sign rhythm
From 2017 the order runs Aries, Scorpio, Gemini, Capricorn, Leo, then back to Aries in 2025. The degrees drift a little earlier each time, which is why the echo with 2018 is close but not exact.

Venus Retrograde FAQ
›When is Venus retrograde in 2026?
Venus turns retrograde on October 3, 2026 at 8°29′ Scorpio and turns direct on November 13 in the Americas (November 14 in UTC) at 22°52′ Libra. Counting the shadow, the whole cycle runs from August 31 to December 15.
›Is Venus retrograde right now?
The status card at the top of this page answers that live, with the day of the retrograde and a countdown to the next turning point. Between October 3 and November 13, 2026 the answer is yes.
›How long does Venus retrograde last, and how often does it happen?
Each Venus retrograde lasts about six weeks — between 40.9 and 43.0 days from 2017 to 2035 — and comes round every 19 months or so. With the shadow on either side, one cycle covers about 106 days.
›What is the Venus retrograde shadow period?
The shadow is the stretch of zodiac Venus covers three times. The pre-shadow begins when Venus first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct (August 31, 2026); the post-shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde (December 15, 2026).
›Is Venus retrograde bad for relationships?
No. It is better read as a review than a threat: old patterns, needs and conversations come back for a second look. The practical caution is about rushing irreversible decisions while you are still in the middle of that review.
›Can you get married during Venus retrograde?
Traditional electional astrology prefers not to start partnerships while Venus is retrograde, and some couples choose other dates for that reason. If your date is already set, there is no reason to cancel it; if you are still choosing, the dates outside October 3 – November 13 avoid the question.
›Will my ex come back during Venus retrograde?
People often think about, or hear from, someone from the past during a Venus retrograde, because the theme is looking back. Nothing in the sky decides whether that person returns, and whether you answer is your choice.
›Do I need my exact birth time to use the checker?
No. Without a time the planets are still exact, because they move slowly within a day. The Moon can be a few degrees off, and the Ascendant, Midheaven and houses are left out, because they depend on the time.
›Is the Venus retrograde checker free?
Yes. Both charts, every triple pass with its dates, the houses and the 2018 echo are free and need no account. Pro adds each pass to the minute and checks your composite chart as well.
›What should we do after checking our dates?
Use the three dates for each point as a conversation calendar: name the theme at the first pass, talk it through at the retrograde pass, and decide at the last one. For the week-by-week picture, the couple horoscope follows the same two charts.
