What Is a Moon Sign?
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. The Moon changes sign every two to two-and-a-half days, so a moon sign calculator needs your birth date, and on roughly one day in three, your birth time as well.
What the Moon sign governs
If the Sun sign is the person you are trying to become, the Moon sign is the person you already are when nobody is watching. It describes what you need in order to feel safe, how you react before you have had time to think, what you were like as a child and what you are like when you are tired. It is the sign that runs the house.
Why it changes so fast
The Moon orbits the Earth in 27.3 days, so it laps the whole zodiac in under a month — about 13° a day, a sign every 2½ days. Two people born a day apart can have different Moon signs; two born an hour apart occasionally can too. That speed is why the Moon sign feels so personal, and why it is the first thing a moon sign calculator has to get exactly right.
Why a moon sign calculator asks for a place
Not for the Moon’s position — that is the same everywhere on Earth at a given instant — but for the time zone. “10 March, 8 pm” is a different instant in Tokyo than in Toronto, and on a day the Moon changes sign that difference decides the answer. The place also gives the Moon its house, if you know your birth time.
How the Moon Sign Is Calculated
Date, time and place
The calculator converts your local birth time to universal time using the historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules for the birthplace, computes the Moon’s geocentric longitude for that instant, and reads off the sign and degree. With a birth time it also casts the houses from your rising sign and tells you which one the Moon sits in.
Tropical or sidereal?
Western astrology, this site and nearly every calculator in English use the tropical zodiac, which starts at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars, which currently sits about 24° earlier. The same Moon can be “Taurus” in one and “Aries” in the other. Neither is wrong; they are different systems, and you should read your Moon sign in the one your astrologer uses.
What this moon sign calculator does differently
It resolves the time zone from the birthplace instead of asking you for a UTC offset. It reports the degree and house, not just the sign. It checks whether the Moon changed sign on your birth day and tells you the exact local time it did. And it shows your birth Moon phase on the same card, because the two questions are almost always asked together.
Moon Sign Without a Birth Time
Two days in three, you don’t need it
Because the Moon holds a sign for about 60 hours, most calendar days begin and end with the Moon in the same sign. On those days your Moon sign is certain from the date alone, and the moon sign calculator says so explicitly. Only the degree is approximate — within about 6°, which matters for aspects but not for the sign.
When the Moon changed signs on your birthday
On the remaining days the Moon crosses from one sign into the next at some hour of the day. Other tools either guess noon or quietly show one answer. This one shows both candidates, the time of the change at your birthplace, and a one-line sketch of each so you can see which one you recognise.
How to tell which one is yours
Read both descriptions
Moon signs are felt rather than seen, so self-recognition is reliable here. Read the two cards and the two placement pages they link to; most people know within a paragraph.
Morning or evening?
The change time splits the day in two. A parent’s memory of “before breakfast” or “late at night” is usually enough to settle it, and a birth certificate with a time settles it completely.
Run the rising-sign scan too
If you are narrowing down your birth time anyway, the rising sign calculator lists every rising sign of that day with its time window. Cross the two lists and the number of possibilities drops quickly.
The Moon Phase You Were Born Under
Phase is the Sun–Moon angle
The phase of the Moon is nothing more than the angle between the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth. At 0° they are together and the Moon is dark; at 180° they face each other and the Moon is full. Astrologers divide the circle into eight 45° phases, and the one you were born in is read as a temperament laid over the whole chart.
The eight birth phases
- New Moon 0°–45° — Born at a beginning: instinctive, self-starting, still discovering what the project of your life is.
- Waxing Crescent 45°–90° — Born while the light is growing: eager, a little restless, pulled between old habits and a new direction.
- First Quarter 90°–135° — Born at a turning point: decisive under pressure, built for crisis, impatient with drift.
- Waxing Gibbous 135°–180° — Born just before fullness: analytical, perfecting, driven to improve whatever is in front of you.
- Full Moon 180°–225° — Born at opposition: relationship-centred, visible, living out the tension between what you want and what you need.
- Waning Gibbous 225°–270° — Born as the light begins to leave: a communicator and teacher, here to pass on what was learned.
- Third Quarter 270°–315° — Born at the second turning point: reflective, questioning, dismantling what no longer holds.
- Waning Crescent 315°–360° — Born at the end of the cycle: inward, intuitive, carrying something old that wants to be released.
Illumination and what it doesn’t mean
The percentage on the result card is how much of the Moon’s face was lit — (1 − cos θ) ÷ 2 for an angle θ. It is an astronomical fact, not a score. A 3 % crescent is not a weaker Moon than a 97 % gibbous; it is a different phase with a different meaning. Use the number to place yourself in the cycle, not to rank yourself.
Moon Sign vs Sun Sign vs Rising Sign
Three signs, three jobs
The Sun is the core — what you are building a life around. The Moon is the interior — what you need and how you react. The rising sign is the exterior — how you come across. Astrologers call them the big three, and the result card above shows all of them so you can read the Moon in context.
Sun, Moon and rising together
When the three share an element, the personality reads the same from every angle. When they clash, the Moon is usually the one people miss: a Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon performs in public and retreats in private, and anyone who only knows the Sun sign will misjudge them. That gap is the most useful thing a moon sign calculator can show you about someone you love.

Why Calculators Disagree About Your Moon Sign
Sidereal vs tropical
This is the big one. A site built for Vedic astrology will place your Moon roughly 24° earlier, which moves it into the previous sign about 80 % of the time. If two calculators disagree by exactly one sign, check which zodiac each one uses before you doubt either.
Time zone and the noon default
On a sign-change day, a tool that defaults to noon, applies the wrong daylight-saving rule, or asks you to type a UTC offset can land on either side of the change. The calculator above shows you the change time precisely so you can see how close the call was.
Frequently Asked Questions
›What is a Moon sign?
The Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your emotional nature: what you need to feel safe, how you react before you think, and how you care for others.
›How do I find my Moon sign?
Enter your birth date and place, and your birth time if you know it, into the moon sign calculator above. It converts the time to universal time, finds the Moon's position to the degree, and reports the sign, degree and house.
›Can I find my Moon sign without my birth time?
Usually. The Moon stays in one sign for two to two-and-a-half days, so on most dates the sign is the same all day. If it changed signs on your birthday, the calculator shows both candidates and the exact time the Moon moved, so a rough memory of morning or evening settles it.
›What moon phase was I born under?
The calculator shows it beside your Moon sign. The phase is the angle between the Sun and Moon at your birth: 0° is a New Moon, 180° a Full Moon, with crescent, quarter and gibbous phases between.
›Why does another calculator give me a different Moon sign?
Either it uses the sidereal zodiac (common on Vedic astrology sites), which sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used here and on most Western sites, or the time zone was handled differently on a day the Moon changed signs.
›What is the difference between Moon sign and Sun sign?
The Sun sign comes from your birth date and describes your core identity. The Moon sign changes every few days and describes your inner, emotional self. Many people feel their Moon sign describes them better in private than their Sun sign does in public.
›What does the Moon's house mean?
The house shows the area of life where your emotional needs play out — home and family in the 4th, relationships in the 7th, work in the 10th. It needs a birth time, because the houses are set by the rising sign.
›Is this moon sign calculator free?
Yes. Moon sign, degree, house, birth Moon phase, Sun and rising signs and the readings are all free with no account.
