What Is the North Node?
The North Node is the point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s path heading north. It is not a planet but a direction: astrologers read it as the life you are growing into, with the South Node — always exactly opposite — as the comfort zone you arrived with.
The South Node — the other end of the line
Because the nodes are the two ends of one line, you never calculate them separately: a North Node at 25° Scorpio is a South Node at 25° Taurus. The South Node describes skills so practised they run on autopilot; the North Node names the muscle that only grows when you work it. That is why this north node calculator always shows both — a single point without its opposite is half a sentence.
Why it moves backwards
The Moon’s orbit slowly regresses, so the nodes travel backwards through the zodiac — out of Aries into Pisces, not into Taurus — at about 0.05° a day. One sign takes roughly eighteen and a half months; the full backwards lap takes 18.6 years, which is why the nodal return lands near ages 18–19, 37 and 55–56.

Everyone born inside a window shares the sign; nobody shares the degree.
Where tables go wrong
The trouble starts at the edges. Tables round to dates, time zones blur the cut-off, and — the bigger problem — there are two different nodes in circulation (next section) whose sign-change dates can sit weeks apart. True Node vs Mean Node
Two calculations, one Moon
There are two ways to compute the node, and they explain most disagreements between calculators. The Mean Node smooths the Moon’s wobble into a steady 0.053°-per-day drift. The True Node follows the wobble itself — oscillating up to about 1.75° around the mean, even briefly moving forwards. Away from a boundary they name the same sign every time; near one, their change dates can differ by two or three weeks.
Which one should you trust?
This calculator uses the mean node — the same convention as every chart on this site — and shows your exact degree, so you can compare against any table honestly. Cafe Astrology’s tables and astro.com’s default use the True Node; neither is wrong, and for roughly 97% of birth dates they agree completely. Inside the disputed strip, the result names the alternative and gives you both readings — the debate has run for decades precisely because it only ever matters at the edges.

The sign is the flavour; the house is the arena. A Scorpio North Node in the 11th house grows through communities and shared causes; the same node in the 2nd grows through money and self-worth. The Nodal Return: Ages 18–19, 37 and 55–56
Every 18.6 years the transiting node comes home to its natal place — a quieter cousin of the Saturn return, which arrives on a 29.5-year clock. Nodal returns tend to read as crossroads rather than exams: the direction question gets asked again, often through an event that pulls the South Node habit out for inspection. The half-return at ~9 and 27 (the “nodal opposition”) is the same conversation from the other chair.
