What Is Draconic Synastry?
Draconic synastry compares two people’s draconic charts, each one turned so that its own North Node sits at 0° Aries, with each other and with the ordinary charts. It is a second, rotated reading of the same two charts.
A one-sentence definition
Take each birth chart, turn the zodiac so the person’s North Node becomes 0° Aries, and compare the results across the two charts. That is draconic synastry. The calculator above does it in both directions and adds the draconic-to-draconic layer.
The draconic chart: your chart measured from the North Node
An ordinary chart measures every planet from 0° Aries, the spring equinox point. A draconic chart measures every planet from the North Node instead: draconic longitude equals ordinary longitude minus the Node’s longitude. The spacing between your planets stays the same; only the signs they sit in change.
That change is usually large. In our sample, the Sun’s draconic sign matched its ordinary sign only 8.5% of the time. Alex, in our example, has the Sun at 21° Pisces in the ordinary chart and at 26° Taurus in the draconic one.
Why astrologers read it as a deeper layer
The Moon’s Nodes are where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s, and astrologers associate them with direction and long-term growth. Many of them read the draconic chart, built around the Node, as describing deeper motives that sit underneath the everyday personality.
In draconic synastry that becomes a question: whose deeper motives meet which part of the other person’s everyday chart? We treat the answers as one more lens on a relationship, not as proof of anything.
How to Use the Draconic Synastry Calculator
The draconic synastry calculator needs two birth dates and places; birth times help but are optional. Here is the order in which to read the result.
Step 1: Enter both birth dates and places
Add each person’s birth date, time and place. Without a time, switch on “I don’t know the time”: the planets still work, the Moon is marked approximate and the angles are left out.
Step 2: Read the angle between your Nodes
The dial shows each person’s draconic zodiac turned to their own North Node, and the angle between the two. That angle is how far draconic-to-draconic differs from your usual synastry.
In the example above, Alex and Sam were born about 17 months apart and their Nodes sit 27.4° apart. Their draconic-to-draconic synastry is their usual synastry turned by those 27.4°.
Step 3: Read both directions
One column lists your draconic points on your partner’s chart, the other lists theirs on yours. They differ because each chart is turned by its own Node.
Step 4: Check the orb tiers
Exact means within 1°, close within 2° and wide within 3°. Personal planets and exact contacts are listed first.
Step 5: Read the draconic-to-draconic table
It lists the contacts between your two draconic charts, which is your usual synastry turned by the angle between your Nodes.
The Three Layers of Draconic Synastry
Draconic synastry has three layers, and most calculators show only one or two. Here is what each one compares.
Your draconic planets on their chart
The first layer places your draconic points on your partner’s ordinary chart. Astrologers read these contacts as your deeper motives meeting their everyday self. Alex’s draconic Venus, for example, sits 1.7° from Sam’s Midheaven.
Their draconic planets on your chart
The second layer is the reverse: your partner’s draconic points on your ordinary chart. For Alex and Sam it looks quite different. Sam’s draconic Ascendant falls 0.8° from Alex’s Midheaven, and Sam’s draconic Jupiter sits 0.2° from opposing Alex’s Mars.
Why the two directions differ
Each chart is turned by its own Node, so the two directions use two different rotations. Your draconic Venus lands on their Moon when your ordinary Venus sits exactly your Node’s longitude away from their Moon; their draconic Venus lands on your Moon only when their own Node allows it.
That is why the calculator shows two separate columns. A contact that runs both ways is rare and worth noticing.
Draconic to draconic
The third layer compares the two draconic charts with each other. It looks new, but it is your ordinary synastry turned by the angle between your two Nodes, as the next section shows.
The Node Gap: Why Draconic-to-Draconic Can Look Like Your Usual Synastry
Every draconic-to-draconic aspect equals an ordinary aspect shifted by the difference between your two Nodes. That one number explains most of what people find puzzling about draconic synastry.
The Node moves about 19.3° a year
The mean North Node moves backwards through the zodiac at 19.34° a year and completes the circle every 18.61 years. Two people’s Nodes are therefore about 19.3° apart for every year between their birthdays, up to a maximum of 180° at about 9.3 years.
Born the same year
If you were born within about six months of each other, your Nodes are less than 10° apart, and your draconic-to-draconic synastry is close to your ordinary synastry. Only 5.8% of random pairs in our sample had Nodes that close.
Born about nine years apart
Around a 9.3-year gap, the Nodes are opposite each other. Every conjunction in your ordinary synastry becomes an opposition in draconic-to-draconic, trines become sextiles, and squares stay squares.
Born about 18.6 years apart
One full Node cycle later, the Nodes line up again and the two layers coincide once more. That is why some couples with a large age gap find their draconic-to-draconic synastry looks exactly like their ordinary synastry.
Which Draconic Synastry Contacts Matter Most?
Draconic synastry produces a lot of tight contacts, so ranking them is most of the work. These are the rules the calculator uses.
Personal planets first
Contacts between the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and the Ascendant, the personal points, carry the most weight. Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and the Midheaven come next, and the outer planets last. The columns in the calculator follow that order.
Orb: how tight is tight?
Draconic synastry works with small orbs. The calculator lists conjunctions and oppositions within 3°, the most common default, in three tiers.
Exact: within 1°
Exact contacts are the most specific, yet they are not rare: 93.0% of random couples in our sample had at least one draconic contact within 1°.
Close: within 2°
Within 2°, 99.4% of couples had at least one contact, and 67.0% had one between personal points.
Wide: within 3°
Within 3°, 81.0% of couples had a contact between personal points, and the average couple had 8.1 contacts in all.
Both directions at once
A contact that appears in both columns, or in one column and in the draconic-to-draconic table, is less common than a single one. Look for those repeats before reading meaning into a single exact contact.
Angles need a birth time
Contacts with the Ascendant or Midheaven depend on the exact birth time. The calculator leaves them out when a time is missing, and marks Moon contacts as approximate.
Reading Common Draconic Synastry Contacts
The readings below describe how astrologers usually interpret a few frequent draconic synastry contacts. The calculator gives a reading for each one it finds.
Draconic Sun on their Moon
As a conjunction
One person’s draconic sense of purpose lands on the other’s emotional needs. The relationship can feel familiar and easy to settle into.
As an opposition
Purpose and feeling face each other across the chart. It can feel like a mirror: each of you shows the other what is missing.
Draconic Moon on their Sun
As a conjunction
One person’s draconic emotional needs meet the other’s identity. The Moon person often feels at home around the Sun person’s way of being.
As an opposition
Needs and identity pull in different directions, which can bring both attraction and friction. Talking about what each of you needs helps.
Draconic Venus on their Mars
As a conjunction
Affection meets desire. Astrologers read this as one of the most romantic draconic synastry contacts, with an easy physical spark.
As an opposition
The spark is there, but it comes with tension: one person wants closeness while the other wants pursuit.
Draconic Venus on their Venus
Two ways of loving line up. Shared taste and similar ideas of affection make this contact easy to live with.
Draconic Saturn on a personal planet
Saturn brings commitment and limits. On a partner’s Sun, Moon or Venus, it can feel like steadiness or like pressure, depending on how the two of you handle responsibility.
Outer planets in draconic synastry
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly and describe generations more than individuals. The calculator ranks their draconic contacts last; give them weight only when they land on a personal planet or an angle within 1°.
Contacts with the Ascendant and Midheaven
A draconic planet on a partner’s Ascendant touches how they meet the world; on the Midheaven, their direction and public life. In the example, Sam’s draconic Ascendant sits 0.8° from Alex’s Midheaven.
Birth Time, Mean Node and Other Technical Choices
Draconic synastry calculators can disagree for technical reasons. Here are the choices this one makes, and why.
What changes without a birth time
Very little. The mean Node moves only about 3.2′ a day, so draconic planets hold without a time. The Moon moves up to about 6.6° either side of noon, and the Ascendant and Midheaven need the exact time.
In our sample, 35.9% of contacts between personal points involved the Moon. Without a birth time the calculator keeps them but marks them with ≈.
Mean Node or True Node?
This draconic synastry calculator uses the mean Node and says so. The True Node swings around the mean one by up to 1.88°, and by 0.96° on average.
That is enough to matter: 27.6% of contacts between personal points moved in or out of a 3° orb when we switched Nodes. If another calculator gives a different list, check which Node it uses. You can look up your own Node on our North Node calculator.
Which orb to use
Most draconic synastry calculators default to about 3°, and many astrologers give the most weight to contacts within 1°. That is why the tiers above exist.
What about the draconic composite?
A draconic composite is the ordinary composite chart turned by the midpoint of the two Nodes. Its aspects are identical to the ordinary composite’s; only the signs change.
Draconic Synastry vs Regular Synastry vs the Composite Chart
Draconic synastry is one of three common ways to compare charts. Each answers a different question.
Regular synastry: how you interact
The full synastry chart compares the two ordinary charts, with every aspect between them. It is the foundation; see the synastry aspects for what each one means.
Draconic synastry: a second, rotated look
Draconic synastry turns each chart by its own Node and compares again, in both directions. It adds contacts that the ordinary comparison does not show.
Composite: the relationship as one chart
The composite chart builds one chart from the midpoints of the two, and the Davison chart casts one for the midpoint in time and space. Both describe the relationship as a third thing.
| Regular synastry | Draconic synastry | Composite chart | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compares | Two ordinary charts | Charts turned by their Nodes | One merged chart |
| Directions | One shared list | Two, plus draconic to draconic | One chart |
| Needs birth times | For houses and angles | For the Moon and angles | For houses and angles |

Draconic Synastry Myths
Draconic synastry attracts big claims. Here is how three common ones hold up against the numbers.
“A draconic contact proves a deep bond”
With 93.0% of random couples having at least one draconic contact within 1°, a single contact proves very little. Even the classic draconic Sun–Moon conjunction, in either direction, turned up in 6.5% of random pairs within 3°.
“Draconic synastry is more accurate”
It is not more accurate, only different: the same two charts, turned another way. Use it alongside regular synastry, not instead of it.
“No draconic contacts means no connection”
About one couple in five (19.0%) had no contact between personal points within 3°. Alex and Sam are one of them. The rest of your synastry, and how you treat each other, still applies.
Draconic Synastry FAQ
›What is draconic synastry?
Draconic synastry compares two people’s draconic charts, each one turned so that its own North Node sits at 0° Aries, with each other and with the ordinary charts. The calculator above shows both directions of draconic-to-tropical contact and the draconic-to-draconic layer.
›How is draconic synastry different from regular synastry?
Regular synastry compares the two ordinary charts. Draconic synastry first turns each chart by its own North Node, so each person’s draconic planets land on new degrees of the other chart, and the result differs in each direction. Draconic-to-draconic is your regular synastry turned by the angle between your two Nodes.
›Draconic to draconic or draconic to tropical: which matters more?
Most astrologers start with draconic-to-tropical contacts in both directions, because they add new information. Draconic-to-draconic adds less: it is your usual synastry turned by the angle between your Nodes, which is almost nothing for couples born within a few months of each other.
›What orb should I use in draconic synastry?
A tight one. This calculator lists conjunctions and oppositions within 3°, the common default, and marks those within 1° as exact. Tight contacts are common: 93.0% of random couples have at least one draconic contact within 1°, so look at which planets are involved and whether contacts run both ways.
›Do I need a birth time for draconic synastry?
Mostly not. The mean Node moves only about 3.2′ a day, so the draconic planets hold without a time; only the Moon and the Ascendant and Midheaven need one. In our sample, 35.9% of contacts between personal points involved the Moon, and the calculator marks those as approximate.
›Mean Node or True Node?
This page uses the mean Node and says so. The True Node swings around it by up to 1.88° (0.96° on average), enough to move 27.6% of contacts between personal points in or out of a 3° orb, so a True-Node calculator can give different results.
›What does draconic Sun conjunct my partner’s Moon mean?
Astrologers read it as one person’s draconic sense of purpose landing on the other’s emotional needs: the bond can feel familiar and easy to settle into. It is not rare, since 6.5% of random couples have it within 3° one way or the other, so read it alongside the rest of your synastry.
›Does draconic synastry show a deeper bond?
It gives a second, rotated reading of the same two charts, which many astrologers associate with a deeper or longer-term layer of a relationship. A single contact proves nothing on its own, because almost every couple has several. How you treat each other matters far more.
›Why does our draconic-to-draconic synastry look like our regular synastry?
Because your Nodes are close together. The Node moves about 19.3° a year, so the angle between two Nodes grows by about 19.3° for each year of age gap, up to 180° at about 9.3 years, and couples born within a few months of each other get nearly the same results. Only 5.8% of random pairs have Nodes within 10° of each other.
›Is the draconic synastry calculator free?
Yes, with no account. Everyone gets both directions, draconic-to-draconic, a short reading for every contact and the full reading of each direction’s strongest planet-to-planet contact. Pro adds the full reading for every contact.
