What Is Friendship Compatibility in Astrology?
Friendship compatibility in astrology compares two people’s full birth charts and reads the contacts between them for what they mean in a friendship: how easily you talk, have fun, relax together and stay close over time.
A one-sentence definition
Friendship compatibility is synastry asked a different question. The same contacts that a love reading weighs for attraction are weighed here for conversation, comfort, shared fun and loyalty.
Why the whole chart, not the sun sign
Most friendship compatibility tools only ask for two sun signs. That gives 78 possible answers for eight billion people, and it ignores the planets that do most of the work in a friendship: Mercury, the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn.
This friendship compatibility calculator uses both full charts. Every result lists the aspects it is built on, so you can see exactly why a dimension reads the way it does.
Three relationships, three readings
A friend, a sibling and a colleague can share the same contact with you and live it differently. So this friendship compatibility calculator reads the same two charts three ways: as friends, as family and as coworkers.
In our example, Riley’s Saturn opposes Jordan’s Mercury. Between friends that is a little weight on staying power; between colleagues it is the main source of friction in communication.
How to Use the Friendship Compatibility Calculator
The friendship compatibility calculator needs two birth dates and places. Birth times help but are optional. Here is the order to read the result in.
Step 1: Enter both birth dates and places
Add each person’s birth date, time and place. Without a time, switch on “I don’t know the time”: the planets still work, the Moon is marked approximate and that person’s houses are left out.
Step 2: Pick the relationship
Choose Friends, Family or Coworkers. The same two charts give three different readings, because each relationship leans on different planets and houses.
In the example above, Riley and Jordan’s friendship compatibility reads as easy company: relaxing together flows and staying power is the tense dimension. Switch to Coworkers and the picture changes, with communication and pace both tense.
Step 3: Read the four dimensions
Each dimension is flowing, mixed, tense or quiet. The bar shows the flowing contacts to the right of the centre line and the friction to the left.
Step 4: Open a dimension to see the contacts behind it
Every result lists the aspects it is built on: whose planet, which aspect and how close. Tighter contacts count for more.
Step 5: Check the houses and your sun signs
See which of the other person’s planets fall in the houses that matter for this relationship, and compare the full chart with the sun-sign score of your sign pair.
The Four Dimensions of Friendship Compatibility
The Friends tab splits friendship compatibility into four dimensions. Each one reads only the planet pairs that bear on it, in both directions.
Talk (Mercury)
Mercury contacts are the first thing friendship compatibility looks at, because they show how your minds meet: Mercury to Mercury, Mercury to the Moon, Mercury to the Sun and Mercury to Jupiter.
When it flows
You follow each other’s train of thought, finish plans quickly and can talk for hours without either of you steering.
When it rubs
Jokes and plans land wrong. Checking what the other person meant before reacting does more than any amount of talking faster.
Fun and shared growth (Jupiter and Venus)
Jupiter with the Sun or Venus, Venus with Venus or the Sun, and Mars with Jupiter. These are the contacts behind the playful side of friendship compatibility: adventures, celebrations and new interests.
When it flows
Plans get bigger and invitations get a yes. You leave each other in a better mood than you found each other.
When it rubs
One of you keeps raising the stakes. Taking turns to choose, and keeping some plans small, stops either of you feeling dragged along.
Feeling at ease (the Moon)
The Moon with the other person’s Moon, Sun, Venus, Jupiter or Mars decides the heart of friendship compatibility: whether you can simply be in the same room. You can look up your own Moon with the Moon sign calculator.
When it flows
Moods are read without explanation and silence is comfortable. These are often the friends you call first.
When it rubs
What calms one of you can unsettle the other. Saying what you need, and giving room on bad days, keeps it comfortable.
Staying power (Saturn)
Saturn with the Sun, Moon, Mercury or Venus, plus Sun to Sun, shows whether loyalty and reliability are built into your friendship compatibility.
When it flows
You can pick up after months apart. Steady Saturn contacts are what long friendships are built on.
When it rubs
One of you can feel judged or on duty. It eases when expectations are said out loud and the friendship is allowed to change shape.
Every individual contact has a meaning of its own too; the synastry aspect guides cover the most common ones in depth.
Flowing, Mixed, Tense or Quiet: Reading the Results
Each friendship compatibility dimension adds up its flowing contacts and its friction separately. Trines and sextiles flow; squares and oppositions rub; a conjunction flows unless Mars or Saturn is in it, in which case it counts both ways.
Flowing
The flowing contacts are more than twice the friction. This is where the relationship takes the least effort.
Mixed
Both are present in similar strength. There is something good here and something to manage, usually in the same area.
Tense
The friction is more than twice the flow. This is where the relationship needs more effort, and the reading says what tends to help.
Quiet
No close contact reaches the threshold. Quiet is neutral in friendship compatibility: that part of the relationship will be what the two of you make of it.
Why there is no percentage
A single friendship compatibility score hides the most useful part: where it is easy and where it is not. In random pairs, every dimension comes out tense 21–25% of the time, so a tense dimension is ordinary, not a verdict.
Family Compatibility: The Charts You Didn’t Choose
Family is the one relationship you did not pick. The Family tab uses the same method as friendship compatibility, with its own planets and houses. The houses it uses are the 4th, home and roots, and the 10th, authority and the public role.
Belonging
The Moon with the other person’s Moon, Sun, Venus or Saturn: whether home feels shared, and whether care comes easily or with duty attached.
Roles and respect
Sun to Sun, Sun to Saturn, Sun to Mars and Mars to Saturn: who decides, who has the last word, and whether those roles have kept up with the years.
Daily life
Mercury and Mars contacts: chores, plans, noise and tone, the things that matter most when you share a roof.
Support
Jupiter with the Sun or Moon, Venus with the Sun, and Jupiter with Venus: whether help is offered before it is asked for, or arrives in a form the other did not need.
Age gaps and planetary cycles
Relatives are often born decades apart, and the slow planets turn that gap into structure. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round, Jupiter about 12.
Parents and children
In our sample, every pair born 29 years apart had the two Saturns in conjunction. Around 8, 15 and 22 years apart, Saturn squares or opposes itself in 39–44% of pairs, the cycle behind many generational arguments about duty and freedom.
Siblings
Siblings born 12 years apart had Jupiter in conjunction in 99.7% of pairs. Siblings close in age share almost every slow planet, which is why the faster ones decide how family compatibility feels between them.
Coworker Compatibility: Colleagues, Managers and Partners
The Coworkers tab applies the friendship compatibility method to working together. It uses the 6th house, daily work and routines, and the 10th, career and reputation.
Communication
Mercury with Mercury, the Sun, Saturn or Mars: whether briefs, emails and feedback land the way they were meant.
Drive and pace
Mars with Mars, the Sun, Saturn or Jupiter: whether you push in the same direction or turn deadlines into contests.
Structure and trust
Saturn with the Sun or Moon, and Moon to Sun: whether commitments feel safe in the other person’s hands.
Shared goals
Jupiter and the Sun with each other, Jupiter with Mercury, and contacts to the Midheaven, which needs a birth time.
Riley and Jordan show why the modes are separate. The Saturn–Mercury opposition that only weighs on their staying power as friends is their main friction as colleagues, alongside a Mars–Jupiter square on pace.
Across 20,000 random pairs, 49.8% read clearly differently between at least two modes. Easy friends can be hard colleagues, and the other way round. For a specific question about one working relationship, try an AI synastry reading.
The Houses of Friendship: 11th, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 10th
Houses show where in your life the other person’s planets land, the second layer of friendship compatibility. Each mode reads two of them.
The 11th house: friends and groups
The 11th is the classic house of friendship compatibility: friends, groups, networks and shared hopes. In the example, Jordan’s Saturn sits in Riley’s 11th house.
The 3rd house: siblings and everyday contact
The 3rd covers siblings, neighbours and the people you see without planning to. Jordan’s Venus is in Riley’s 3rd.
The 4th and 10th houses: family
The 4th is home and roots, the 10th authority and the public face of a family. Riley’s Venus falls in Jordan’s 10th house.
The 6th and 10th houses: work
The 6th is daily work and routines, the 10th career and reputation. Jordan’s Mars and Jupiter both fall in Riley’s 6th.
Houses need the owner’s birth time
To place Jordan’s planets in Riley’s houses, the calculator needs Riley’s birth time, not Jordan’s. Without it that direction is left out rather than guessed; the planets in partner’s houses tool shows all twelve houses both ways.
Overlays in these houses are common. In our sample, 40.5% of people had at least one of the other person’s planets from the Sun to Saturn in their 11th house, 40.1% in the 3rd, 40.6% in the 4th, 40.0% in the 6th and 40.8% in the 10th.
Why Sun Signs Don’t Decide Friendship Compatibility
Sun-sign friendship compatibility is everywhere, so we measured it against the full chart. The answer is clear.
What the numbers say
Across 20,000 random pairs, the sun-sign friendship score had a correlation of 0.04 with full-chart friendship compatibility. Sun signs explained 0.2% of the result.
Among pairs with a sun-sign friendship score of 80 or more, 63.3% still had at least one tense friendship dimension. Among pairs scoring 50 or less, 23.5% read clearly flowing as friends.
What sun-sign pages are good for
Sun-sign pages describe two temperaments, and that is useful when you only know a birthday. Riley and Jordan are Libra and Leo, a pair with a sun-sign friendship score of 81; their Leo and Libra page is a fair sketch of how they come across.
What the full chart adds
Their full charts add the one tense dimension the sun signs cannot see. Browse all 78 pairs on the zodiac sign compatibility hub, then use the calculator for the real friendship compatibility of two people.
What This Calculator Leaves Out, and Why
A few choices keep the friendship compatibility reading honest. Here they are.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
People born a few years apart share them. In our sample, Pluto was in conjunction for every pair born one or two years apart and for none born four years apart, so these planets describe a generation rather than two people.
A single score
Four dimensions with the contacts behind them say more than one number, and they do not pretend to a precision the charts do not have.
Romance
Attraction and long-term partnership are read differently from friendship compatibility. For that, use the synastry chart or the composite chart.
Birth time and the Moon
Without a birth time, friendship compatibility still works for the planets, but the Moon can be about 6.6° either side of where noon puts it. In our sample, 26.5% of contacts involved the Moon; those are marked ≈ when a time is missing.
Friendship Compatibility Myths
Three ideas about friendship compatibility come up again and again. Here is how they hold up.
“A tense contact means we shouldn’t be friends”
Every dimension comes out tense in 21–25% of random pairs. Friction shows where a friendship needs more care; good friendship compatibility does not mean none.
“Their planet in my 11th house makes this friendship special”
40.5% of people have one of the other person’s planets in their 11th house. It colours your friendship compatibility; it does not single the friendship out.
“The same sign makes the best friends”
Sun signs explain 0.2% of the full-chart reading, whether the signs match or not. The planets that do the work are rarely the Sun alone.
Friendship Compatibility FAQ
›How do I check friendship compatibility with astrology?
Enter both people’s birth dates and places, and birth times if you have them. The calculator compares the two full charts and reads them three ways, as friends, family or coworkers, with four dimensions each and the exact aspects behind every result. It is free and needs no account.
›Is friendship compatibility different from love compatibility?
The charts are the same; the question is different. Love readings lean on Venus, Mars and the 5th, 7th and 8th houses, while friendship compatibility leans on Mercury, the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn and on the 11th and 3rd houses. For the romantic side, use the full synastry chart.
›Which house rules friendship in astrology?
The 11th house rules friends, groups and shared hopes; the 3rd house covers siblings, neighbours and everyday contact. Having one of the other person’s planets in your 11th house is common: in our sample of 20,000 random pairs it happened 40.5% of the time.
›Which planets matter most for friendship compatibility?
Mercury for how you talk, the Moon for how at ease you feel, Jupiter and Venus for fun and shared growth, and Saturn for staying power. Those are the four dimensions of friendship compatibility the Friends tab reads.
›Can we be friends if our sun signs aren’t compatible?
Yes. Across 20,000 random pairs, the sun-sign friendship score had a correlation of 0.04 with the full-chart reading, so it explained 0.2% of it. Among pairs with a sun-sign score of 50 or less, 23.5% still read clearly flowing as friends.
›What does a tense dimension mean?
In friendship compatibility, a tense dimension shows where the relationship takes more effort, not a reason to walk away. Tense is common: in random pairs, each dimension comes out tense 21–25% of the time. The reading under each dimension says what tends to help.
›How do I read compatibility with a parent or sibling?
Use the Family tab: belonging, roles and respect, daily life and support, plus the 4th and 10th houses. Age gaps matter too, because Saturn returns to the same place about 29.5 years later and Jupiter about 12 years later.
›Can astrology show whether a coworker or manager will work well with me?
The Coworkers tab reads communication, drive and pace, structure and trust, and shared goals, plus the 6th and 10th houses. It shows where you will need clear arrangements, not whether to take a job. The Midheaven contacts need birth times.
›Do I need both birth times?
No. Without a birth time the planets still work; contacts with that person’s Moon are marked ≈, because the Moon moves about 13° a day, and their houses and Midheaven are left out. In our sample, 26.5% of contacts involved the Moon.
›Why are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto left out?
People born a few years apart share them. In our sample, Pluto was in conjunction for every pair born one or two years apart and for none born four years apart, so these planets describe a generation rather than two people.
