John Lennon and Yoko Ono Synastry at a Glance
John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s synastry has 22 contacts between two date-only charts. The tightest are Saturn and Jupiter in his chart both square Venus in hers, and a trine between their two Mercuries.
Neither birth time can be traced to a published record, so both charts are cast for noon on the birth date. The synastry keeps every contact between planets, but there are no Ascendants, no houses and two approximate Moons.
He was born with the Sun at Libra 16°00′ in Liverpool; she with the Sun at Aquarius 29°02′ in Tokyo. Both Suns are in air signs, but 133° apart: 13° wider than a trine, too far for the synastry to count one.
Why 22 contacts
Two random charts with birth times have 31.1 contacts on average. Without any Ascendant, the count is lower for every couple, so 22 here is not comparable with the timed charts on other pages.
A Synastry With No Birth Times
This is the only famous couple on the site with no usable birth time on either side. It shows what synastry can still say from two dates.
What holds
The Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars move at most a degree or two in a day, and the slower planets far less. Contacts between them hold whatever the two birth times were.
What does not
Ascendants, houses and the angles of the composite and Davison charts all need times, so none is drawn. Both Moons are approximate, and both changed sign on the birth day.
A useful comparison
Placed beside the fully timed charts of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, this page shows how much of synastry survives without times: most of it.
His Saturn and Jupiter on Her Venus
Lennon’s Saturn at Taurus 13°14′ and his Jupiter at Taurus 13°43′ sit together, and both square Ono’s Venus at Aquarius 13°21′. The orbs are 0.12° and 0.37°.
Saturn square Venus
Saturn–Venus contacts are read as love meeting duty, limits and time. The square is the version astrologers most associate with friction, and 15.2% of random pairs have it.
Jupiter square Venus
Jupiter–Venus contacts are read as generosity and excess in affection. 13.4% of random pairs have the square.
Two planets, one point
With Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in his chart, her Venus receives both at once: expansion and restraint on the same point.
Mercury Trine Mercury
His Mercury at Scorpio 8°12′ and her Mercury at Pisces 7°14′ are in a trine 0.96° from exact. Only 7.3% of random pairs have a Mercury–Mercury trine, the rarest of their tightest contacts.
What it is read as
Mercury is how a person thinks and talks. A trine between two Mercuries is read as minds that work in a similar rhythm, here two water signs.
His Mercury to her Neptune and Saturn
His Mercury also sextiles her Neptune at Virgo 9°05′ within 0.88° and squares her Saturn at Aquarius 9°42′ within 1.50°. Imagination and discipline meet the same planet.
His Jupiter and Saturn to Her Mars
Her Mars at Virgo 15°15′, retrograde, trines both of his Taurus planets: Jupiter within 1.53° and Saturn within 2.02°.
What these trines are read as
Jupiter–Mars trines are read as encouragement for action; Saturn–Mars trines as stamina and discipline in it. 18.2% and 17.8% of random pairs have them.
Earth signs
Taurus and Virgo are both earth signs, so these trines are read as practical: effort that finds a form.
Sun and Venus
His Sun at Libra 16°00′ trines her Venus within 2.66°, read as warmth between them. 14.1% of random pairs share that synastry contact.
Two Moons in Doubt
Both Moons changed sign on the birth day, so neither Moon sign can be stated with certainty.
Lennon’s Moon: Capricorn or Aquarius
His Moon entered Aquarius at about 11:45 that day. The published 7:00 a.m. time gives Capricorn 27°30′; the evening time near 6:30 p.m. gives Aquarius 3°33′.
Ono’s Moon: almost certainly Sagittarius
Her Moon entered Sagittarius at about 01:45 Tokyo time. Unless she was born in the first two hours of the day, it was in Sagittarius.
Moon contacts
His Pluto at Leo 4°11′ trines her Moon, 1.91° at noon, and his Venus at Virgo 2°55′ squares her Moon, 3.18° at noon. Both are marked approximate.
The Composite Chart: A Sagittarius Sun
Their composite Sun is at Sagittarius 22°31′, with Venus at Scorpio 23°08′ and the Moon at Capricorn 3°07′, approximate. There is no composite Ascendant.
Its tightest aspects
Composite Mercury trines Uranus within 0.32°, Jupiter sextiles Neptune within 0.33°, and Venus sextiles Mars within 0.74°.
What they are read as
Mercury–Uranus is read as original, unconventional ideas; Venus–Mars as attraction in the relationship’s own chart.
The Davison Chart: A New Moon, December 1936
Their Davison chart is cast for 14 December 1936 at 07:00 UT, halfway in time between February 1933 and October 1940. Halfway between Liverpool and Tokyo lies southern Kazakhstan.
A Sagittarius New Moon
The Davison Sun is at Sagittarius 22°08′ and the Moon at Sagittarius 25°41′, a New Moon. A New Moon in a relationship chart is read as a bond that starts something.
The same Sun as the composite
The Davison Sun is within a degree of the composite Sun. The births are 7.6 years apart, eight to the nearest year, an even number, so the two midpoint Suns agree.
Mercury trine Uranus again
The tightest Davison aspect is Mercury trine Uranus within 0.18°, the same pair as the composite’s tightest. Both relationship charts carry it.
What Their Synastry Shares With the Other Famous Couples
Set beside the five other couples on this site, their synastry has some familiar contacts and misses some famous ones.
A Mercury–Venus contact, like all six
His Venus at Virgo 2°55′ opposes her Mercury within 4.33°. Every one of the six famous couples here has some Mercury–Venus contact, and so do 54.2% of random pairs.
No Venus–Mars contact
Their synastry has no Venus–Mars contact at all, unlike three of the six couples. Some Venus–Mars contact appears in 53.7% of random pairs, so its absence is as ordinary as its presence.
It appears in the composite instead
Their composite chart has Venus sextile Mars within 0.74°. A theme missing between the two charts can still show up in the relationship chart.
The Morning Chart and the Evening Chart
Recasting Lennon’s chart for each of the two published times shows what the dispute would decide in their synastry. Ono’s chart stays at noon.
At 7:00 a.m.
His Ascendant is at Libra 10°08′ and his Moon at Capricorn 27°30′. His Ascendant trines her Saturn within 0.44°, and the synastry has 26 contacts.
At 6:30 p.m.
His Ascendant is at Aries 19°46′ and his Moon at Aquarius 3°33′. His Ascendant sits on her Uranus within 0.78°, and the synastry has 25 contacts.
Two different stories
One time ties his Ascendant to her Saturn, the other to her Uranus, and the two times even put his Moon in different signs. That is why this page does not choose between them.
Lennon’s Two Birth Times
John Lennon is one of the best-documented lives of the twentieth century, and still his birth time is not settled.
The evening camp
Ray Coleman’s biography quotes his aunt phoning the hospital at half-past six in the evening and hearing that a boy had just been born. A later book gives 6:30 p.m. as well.
The morning camp
Hunter Davies’s authorised biography of the Beatles and the memoir by his half-sister Julia Baird both say seven in the morning.
Why neither is used
The two camps are eleven and a half hours apart, and neither cites a birth record. Choosing one would decide his Moon sign and Ascendant on a guess.
Yoko Ono’s time
The time listed for her in astrology databases traces back to her own recollection to an astrologer, so it is not used either.
Married in 1969
They met in London in November 1966 and married in Gibraltar on 20 March 1969. John Lennon was killed in New York on 8 December 1980.
What the synastry adds
Their synastry shows his Jupiter and Saturn on her Venus, two Mercuries in a trine and the same Mercury–Uranus trine in both relationship charts. It describes how two charts meet; it says nothing about a life cut short.
